Daily Zoom

Don't forget we have got our hour-long session on Zoom today, between 12 and 1pm. We will have a chat about War Horse, our maths and what we thought about the different deities in the Hindu religion.

We will use the same password and meeting ID as usual.

Reading

Today we are reading chapter 5 in our books, pages 35 - 45.

  1. How does Joey describe his transformation at the start of the chapter?
  2. How does Joey describe Corporal Perkins? Use words and phrases from the passage.
  3. Why is Captain Nicholls worried about the machine gun?
  4. Does Captain Nicholls think that it is a good idea to have horses fighting in the war?
  5. Why do you think Corporal Perkins was kinder and gentler towards Joey?
  6. Describe the character of Tophorn? Do you think he will be kind to Joey?
  7. In what way is the setting of the chapter about to change?
  8. Imagine you are Captain Nicholls about to sail across to France. Describe in two paragraphs how you might be feeling and what you think will happen.

Maths

Today we are looking at dividing decimals by integers; we were multiplying yesterday and using our short multiplication method, remembering the decimal point and place value of our digits. Today we are using our short division method to divide decimals. We have done this before particularly when working with money. The video, here, shows lots of different ways and why the method works but we know if we use our short division well we will get the right answer.

Top Tip: think about what units you are working with and how many digits after the decimal point you need - money always needs tenths and hundredths - £2.50.

English

Today we are going to be concentrating on editing our persuasive letter; you will have worked really hard yesterday to get your letter written in one go, so today we need to have a good look at editing it.

Your letter should include: an address, Dear ....., an introduction (to hook me in), at least 2 paragraphs containing explanation and detail (PEPS) and a conclusion. Make sure you have completed these, whilst also thinking about the sentence types you can add in, the conjunctions you have used and your spellings and punctuation as well.

Today we are going to break our editing into 4 sections each taking 10 to 15 minutes each. You might like the help of a grown up or older sibling to read it with you once or twice.

Tasks:

  1. First read through, thinking about your persuasive techniques (flattery, presumption and veiled threat). Does each paragraph contain examples of these? Are they included in the introduction and conclusion? Is there a nice range (you aren't just using flattery or presumption)?
  2. Have I ticked everything off the success criteria from yesterday? We sometimes read through our writing and underline the different criteria in different colours so we can see what we have included.
  3. Does our writing make sense? Is it grammatically correct, have we punctuated our work correctly? Are there any spellings we need to check?
  4. Lastly, can we improve anything? We talked in our Zoom call on Wednesday about language that we liked or thought was effective; can you up level any of your language to make it more interesting or hard hitting?

Geography

Some geography for today, we are looking at countries and places near to us and how they are different or similar to our country and community over the next half term. We are going to start today by getting familiar with the places and features across Europe.

Follow the link here to find a video that will recap the continent names and some countries in Europe. Pay attention there is a little quiz at the end to test your recapped/new knowledges.

Friday Fun

Here is the link for the web site called Draw with Rob, a bit of cartoon work as an extra activity for you to do if you want.

PE

Joe Wicks is doing his thing once again this morning. We will be joining in in school - feel free to go to The Body Coach Youtube Channel to join in as well. You might choose to do this when you feel like you need some exercise or a bit of a wriggle!

(30 Minutes)

If you have worked quickly today and you have zipped through our work and it is all of a good quality, then you can have a look at the In case you finish... section. This is full of ideas that you can do if your grown ups are busy still working or with them when they have finished.
